GIS FAQs

What is GIS?
  • A GIS (Geographic Information Sytem) is computer system capable of managing, mapping, and analyzing data which has a spatial location.
  • GIS provides a way to store maps in a computer and associate each feature in the map with information from a variety of sources.
  • GIS can be used to query the data, look at patterns in the data, overlay maps, print out maps, and keep computerized, up-to-date records on land-based information.
  • One of the primary functions of government is to provide information. Most of this information -- the information used by planners, assessors, engineers, code enforcement officers, fire and police departments, schools, etc. - is land based. This makes GIS a very useful tool for local government.
